New Year’s letter

Dear clients, colleagues, partners, and employees,

What a year it has been again! For the world, but certainly also on a more personal note for TCM Belgium.

On 25/10/2023, we celebrated our 30th anniversary. For thirty years now, we have been assisting clients in collecting unpaid invoices. I find it particularly special to note the client base we have built over these years. A remarkable 70% of our clients have been with us for twenty years! And this is without subscription fees or minimum requirements. We can be both proud and grateful for this.

Grateful because we realize that the foundation of our success lies in the close collaboration with our clients and their critical perspectives. Each year, we focus on innovative solutions to meet the needs of the market and our clients. Our shared passion for achieving the right results strengthens our story.

I also want to acknowledge the TCM Belgium employees. Without their dedication and insight, we wouldn’t be where we are today. As a cherry on top, reaching the milestone of 30 years was accompanied by an impressive 35% growth! Similar to TCM Belgium’s client base, the core of our employees remains largely unchanged. For 80% of our employees, TCM Belgium is their first employer. This not only keeps knowledge in-house but also evolves due to the average seniority of 10 years and the multicultural environment in which we operate.

The past year was characterized by inflation and price increases. Rest assured, we will not raise our prices. Instead, we want to expand our services. Over the past decade, we have been increasingly asked to provide training to clients/partners/organizations on the broader theme of credit management. Through targeted training, including at the University of Antwerp, we aim to emphasize the importance of prevention. We also brainstorm with clients in need of a sounding board or an alternative approach to solutions and (internal) follow-up of their unpaid invoices.

Over the 30 years, we have grown into a global one-stop-shop for collecting unpaid invoices. Whether a friendly or legal solution is needed, locally or globally, TCM Belgium provides 7/7 assistance to clients worldwide. Since 1995, we have been part of the first international debt collection network, TCM Group. This longstanding global expertise pays off. We know our international partners personally, not just through Google. At least once a year, we come together during the TCM Group AGM, where knowledge is exchanged, cases are discussed, and issues are addressed.

We are not only part of the TCM Group but also of the ABR-BVI (the Belgian professional federation of debt collection agencies), FENCA (the European equivalent), and ACA (the American counterpart). This way, we stay fully informed about everything happening nationally and internationally within the world of collecting unpaid invoices. And rightly so, because things change every year. The year 2023 was marked by a new legal framework for collecting consumer debts. Welcome Book XIX WER! From our position as a debt collection partner, we try to share our knowledge of legal applications and adjustments with our clients.

The importance of staying informed, engaging in dialogue, and sharing knowledge remains evident in 2024 and beyond. The new legislation is proof of the continued lack of knowledge about our sector at all levels. The new legislation once again places the responsibility for debt follow-up on creditors, without improving the debtor’s position. Additionally, there is still a need to adjust the prevailing perception of the debt collection world. We are still not seen enough as a (quick) opportunity for an amicable solution, away from procedural costs. Plenty of challenges for 2024!

What are our ambitions for 2024? Growth? Definitely! We have experienced steady growth for 15 years, and we want to continue that trend. But no growth without stability. Therefore, I want to continue meeting the needs and desires of our clients and employees. Transparency and openness (towards our clients and the outside world), along with security and therefore demarcation, are key.

It is clear that we must continue to focus on knowledge sharing and collaboration. And although 2024 will be characterized by further IT optimizations and the use of AI, that year will also make it clear why human intervention is still necessary to provide the right commercial, social, and legal outcome.

What am I looking forward to? In 2024, I will meet TCM Group colleagues in L.A. and FENCA members in Warsaw, and within our own team, I will welcome a new colleague! I hope to have an equally enjoyable year with the TCM Belgium team as the past year, and I will start 2024 surrounded by family and friends. The Burgundian in me will enjoy all the deliciousness that the end-of-year festivities have to offer!

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,

Sven Dereze
