Shutdown forces the Federal Government of the US into the role of debtor

TCM US federal shutdown 2

Part of the population of America say they saw black snow during the recent festivities. Far from a ‘merry’ Christmas for the Federal Government staff who, for several weeks in a row, have not receive any pay. The locking of horns between Donald Trump and the Democrats has resulted in a shutdown, a temporary standstill of government business. Trump needs the approval of the Democrats in order to pump 5 thousand million dollars into his famous Mexican border wall.

It is not our intention to analyse President Trump’s policy, as our expertise does not extend to political tug-of-war, but we can well imagine the problem that the politicians heap on the unpaid personnel. Outspoken American journalist Kelly O’Donnell asked whether Trump was even capable of imagining the situation of around 800,000 Americans exposed to financial problems because of the situation.

Trouble making ends meet is no uncommon and rather a global phenomenon, often caused by a wave of unforeseen circumstances. Also here in Belgium, there are enough people who, for very divergent reasons, are confronted with payment problems. The myth that you are a debtor by ‘choice’ or ‘your own fault’ is best exploded. And there is more. For example, we in our own Belgian news see that minister Crevits has decided not to pay student nurses’ allowances in their final year, although this was promised when they began their studies. Such a ‘small’ event, an unexpected decision, a divorce, a death, a dismissal, but also the effect of international movements, climate change, globalization, … can make some individuals financially hugely vulnerable.

Debts remain a frustration for creditor and debtor alike, which also means that a job in a debt recovery company is quite a challenge. Dealing with the frustrations, ensuring that the debtor and the creditor treat each other respectfully and feel that their case is being heard, imagining yourself in the various situations, convincing the debtor that we are there to signpost the amicable way for him and see the affair through to a successful conclusion, … . At TCM we can say that we are in fact experts when it comes to the solution of unpaid invoices and the training of sympathetic staff who subscribe to the values of our company.

N.B.: anyone unable to have their unpaid invoices settled in the United States may also engage the services of TCM. Thanks to our international network of local recovery partners we can ensure that debtors are tracked in a correct manner.
